British Marines – The Dutch Wars

These Marines are the earliest in the British forces.

marine2 These two figures are the 1st Earl of Torrington’s Marines in blue (1689-1698). Notice the plug bayonet and the 2nd Earl of Pembroke’s Marines in the red uniform. Copies of a Charles Stadden print, unfortunately the second one is a bit fuzzy.

These regiments did not fight in North America…historically, at least. There is a very good Wikipedia article that summarizes the various regiments that were raised and subsequently disbanded prior to the regiment that eventually became the Royal Marines being raised in 1755.
